Talk to your doctor about oral contraceptives to treat acne.
Acne can develop anywhere on the human body where oil glands are present. Although the face and neck are the most common areas associated with acne, many women will also develop pimples and blemishes on their shoulders and back. Hormonal fluctuations (also seen in teenage acne) are a common cause for female adult acne. Menstrual cycles, pregnancy and the starting and stopping of birth control pills can all contribute to the development of back acne.

Instructions

    • 1
Try an over-the-counter (OTC) topical lotion containing the ingredients benzoyl peroxide, sulfur or salicylic acid to treat back acne. Acne lotions kill bacteria, dry up excess oil and remove the buildup of dead skin cells that also cause acne.
    • 2
Use water-based shower and bath products that are labeled "non-comedogenic" to cleanse acne-prone skin. These products are not oily and won't clog your pores.
    • 3
Visit a dermatologist to determine if prescription-strength acne lotions or oral antibiotics are right for you. If your acne is severe and unresponsive to OTC products, your doctor can prescribe stronger medications (benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin) to clear up your skin.
    • 4
Talk to your doctor about oral contraceptive pills. Some birth control pills (Ortho-Cyclen, Ortho Tri-Cyclen), can improve acne in women.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always shower after exercise and intense physical activity. Sweat and oil can trap dirt and acne-causing bacteria into the skin.
  • Avoid scrubbing, over-washing or picking at the bumps on your back. These behaviors will only make acne worse.
